Decision for KNX Open Protocol control

MediaCityUK is a new community for the creative and digital sector based in Manchester's former docklands in Salford Quays. The project covers covers an area of almost 15 hectares with a closely knit network of streets, squares and boulevards. The 500 million Pound investment by Peel Holdings in the new home for BBC North, a campus for the University of Salford, office space for companies and retail premises as well as flats and a hotel. The first completed phase is one of Europe's biggest high definition studio complexes with seven television studios and two sound studios. The draft was notable for its high degree of energy efficiency, and the developers opted for KNX open protocol control early on. In addition to central monitoring functions of building services engineering, the standardised KNX bus system enables a demand-oriented control for all the lighting. KNX presence detectors from Theben HTS were used through out.

 

Square detection reduces the number required

The places of work offer unconventional and flexible working conditions. Therefore, sensitive presence detectors and constant lighting control were very important criteria on the specification list of the British KNX system integrator EnTech for ensuring the lighting is efficient and only comes on when required. So, 3,000 Theben HTS presence detectors were ordered for the first project phase 鈥 significantly less than originally planned. The number was significantly reduced when EnTech decided to opt for compact office EIB KNX presence detectors. The square structure of the detection area, dictated by the design of the lenses and the built-in sensor, makes it easier to plan the installation almost without overlapping and blind spots.

The benefits of square detection area are obvious: Lower investment costs as fewer devices are needed and, nevertheless, they provide perfect coverage and avoid blind spots.

 

Efficient energy use and easy to use

The available daylight is optimised by the constant light control of the compact office EIB presence detector. Only the difference between the required brightness in the room and the prevailing daylight is supplemented by variably controlled artificial light. This allows comfortable lighting with efficient energy use. The brightness setpoint value can be set separately for the individual presence detectors as required. The intelligent QuickSet plus remote controls from ThebenHTS simplifies setting up and servicing. Settings can be transmitted or predefined values for standard rooms called up. Changes can also be made to the presence detectors at anytime on the spot. The user also has the option of the clic infrared remote control. This allows lighting conditions to be changed, for example closing blinds during a presentation or retrieving up to two preset scenes.
