Warehouse aisles: Energy-efficient lighting control with compact passimo presence detector
1,300 compact passimo presence detectors control the lighting in the Coop central warehouse based on presence and have thereby reduced lighting costs by up to 60%.
A step towards CO2 neutrality
Sustainability is firmly established in the company culture at the Coop Group in Switzerland. This applies to environmentally and socially compatible products, employees and the company, and, last but not least, to the efficient use of resources, and climate protection. In 2008, Coop took the decision to be CO2 neutral in all areas that can be directly influenced by 2023. This means the Coop adopting all technically possible and affordable measures to continually reduce its CO2 emissions. This includes energy-saving measures. Presencedependent lighting with presence detectors from Theben HTS AG offer great potential savings.
Presence-dependent lighting
Over 1,900 retail outlets in Switzerland want to be supplied with goods. The national distribution centre in Wangen near Olten is at the centre of this huge Coop logistics operation. The lighting systems in the extensive high-rack warehouses are very significant. The first efforts to make optimum use of consumption were taken in 2008 with the search for needs-related lighting. A wide range of different solutions and products have been tested. The assumption was that lighting in the warehouse aisles did not need a prioritised system or centralised commands. Lighting only has to come on if someone is present in the warehouse aisles and go off automatically afterwards. Previously, the lighting was switched on permanently. Control via presence detectors was seen to offer an economic and efficient solution. The company opted for ThebenHTS compact passimo presence detectors. They have been specially developed for use in corridors and proved to be impressive in the testing phase with the most accurate measurement at the aisle entry and a clear delineation of the detection area from the neighbouring aisles. And the presence detector also mastered the challenge presented by warehouse aisles up to 6 metres high. Following the tests, the whole warehouse in Wangen near Olten was switched from permanent to needs-driven lighting. 鈥淥ur calculations revealed the energy consumed in the warehouse aisles was reduced by 30 to 60 per cent,鈥 declared Roland Tr眉ssel, head of Coop building services in commenting on the first success. The Coop have now completely refitted other warehouses. Over 1,300 ThebenHTS presence detectors are currently installed.

The clear delineation of the detection area prevents accidental operation with crossing of individual warehouse aisles. |
Adjustable via remote control
The compact passimo with its rectangular detection area provides the ideal preconditions for the solution. It also has mixed light measurement and operates fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps, halogen and light bulbs as well as LEDs. Up to 10 detectors can be combined in parallel for controlling several lighting groups. Each Master switches its lighting group on and off according to its own brightness measurements while presence is detected by all detectors in combination. The technical staff at Coop benefit from easy setting of the parameters using the QuickSet plus remote control. Users can also individually operate up to two lighting groups using the clic infra red remote control. This powerful technology not only makes warehouse lighting more efficient but also helps Coop employees with their work.
