Photovoltaic systems, electric vehicles and Smart Metering solutions – Theben AG energy policy

(Haigerloch, 17th of November 2011) Roof-mounted photovoltaic systems, an emission-free electric vehicle in the fleet, a wide range of energy-efficient systems and the CONEXA 1.0 Smart Meter Gateway: Theben AG in Haigerloch supports energy efficiency and sustainability.

The product range of the Haigerloch family company encompasses classic time switches and lighting controls, motion and presence detectors, clocks and room thermostats through to systems such as KNX and LUXOR living comfort control. Most Theben products are installed unseen in control cabinets. But they all have one thing in common - energy, whether it's electricity or heat, is used efficiently without waste: Where it's needed and only when it's needed.

"Sustainability and energy-efficiency have become more important than ever for technology and product development over recent years. A trend that confirms our drive for energy-saving, conservation solutions and is supported by an ever-increasing clientele at home and abroad," said director Thomas Goes.

Photovoltaic systems

Energy efficiency and sustainability are not just important to our product range. The company installed a photovoltaic system on the roof of its administration building over ten years ago. Another system was installed on the roof on the production building in 2010 covering approx. 840 m2 with an output of 115 kWp. Theben is also involved in another public system. With an annual total output of 160 kWp, this produces a saving of around 120 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Environmentally-friendly air conditioning with heat pump

A heat pump was brought into service in the middle of 2011 to provide air conditioning for the 6,000 m2 production building at Theben. This produces heat in winter and cold in the summer using 75 geothermal probes to supply a constant temperature and fresh air. This measure has led to a significant reduction in the energy used in the heating and air conditioning of the production building. An input of 29 kW of electrical energy produces 206 kW of thermal energy in this system.

Reduction in energy consumption in standby mode with the theben-timer 26

As very many electrical devices, such as PCs and printers, also consume energy when switched off, staff at Theben use one of the company's products to minimise standby losses: The power supply to every one of the work stations involved is switched off automatically at a set time in the evening using the theben-timer 26.

Emission-free electric vehicle

Director Thomas Goes has been single-minded in making sustainability and energy efficiency a key part of company policy: This week sees members of staff take an electric car for a spin. The Citroën C Zero is powered by lithium-ion batteries and has zero emissions over a range of 130 km with speeds of up to 130 km/h. The batteries are fully charged in six hours using a standard 230 Volt power socket. It is possible to recharge the batteries to 80 per cent capacity in half an hour at one of the special charging points (125 A, 400 Volt).

CONEXA 1.0 Smart Meter Gateway

The existing range of products at Theben AG will be extended at the end of the year with the addition of the CONEXA 1.0 Smart Meter Gateway. The CONEXA 1.0 acts as an interface between meters (electricity, gas, water, heating) and provides a data centre for the required signature, encrypted encoding, storage, pricing and transmission of readings via a secure route. The benefits are obvious: Energy providers can secure a marked competitive advantage in the hotly contested energy market and enjoy the highest levels of flexibility and investment security thanks to the combination of a basic meter and an intelligent communications device. This means they achieve far more than the minimum statutory regulations.

"Energy transformation presents us all with big challenges. We will only be able to control this intelligently if we succeed in making consumption transparent. CONEXA 1.0 offers outstanding prospects in this regard," declared director Thomas Goes.

Energy Saving Ideas

With its Energy Saving Ideas campaign, Theben has for years communicated the added value of providing energy-efficient systems and solutions. Depending on the particular application, investment costs are quickly recovered and Theben customers not only save money, but also reduce CO2 emissions. However, Energy Saving Ideas is not just a campaign: It is reality at Theben. The offices in the Development, Sales and Marketing sections, plus the 6,000m2 production building in the Madertal industrial park in Haigerloch, are fitted with presence detectors. This efficient control of lighting enables the company to make significant savings in energy costs and also reduce CO2 emissions.
